Nigeria Faces Collapse Amid Insecurity and Economic Hardship

Civil society organizations (CSOs) in Nigeria have issued a stark warning that the country is on the brink of collapse, citing escalating insecurity, economic hardship, and endemic corruption. They demand urgent government action to address these crises, which have been exacerbated by recent attacks in states such as Borno, Plateau, Kaduna, Katsina, and Niger, resulting in the loss of lives and abductions.

With Nigeria's population exceeding 200 million, many citizens endure multi-dimensional poverty, lack access to food, shelter, and education, and face rising costs due to fuel price hikes. Protests have erupted, particularly in Edo State, against the high cost of living and poor infrastructure.

The CSOs, including ActionAid Nigeria and the Centre for Democracy and Development, emphasize the need for collective action to avert further deterioration of the nation's socio-economic conditions and democratic integrity, especially with the upcoming 2027 general elections. They highlight concerns over insecurity, violence, and the erosion of civic space, calling for accountability from politicians who are perceived to enrich themselves at the expense of the populace.
