Nigeria's Education Minister Reveals NESRI Progress Report

On January 25, 2026, Nigeria's Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, unveiled the NESRI Progress Report, showcasing major advancements in the country's basic education sector.

The report indicates a commitment to reducing the number of school children facing learning poverty, with 45 million children aged 5-14 unable to read at an appropriate level. The Federal Government has allocated N106 billion to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) as a matching grant, marking one of the largest disbursements in recent years.

Additional achievements include the training of 978,000 teachers, renovation of 10,000 classrooms, and distribution of 7.8 million textbooks, alongside a N22 billion investment in teacher professional development. The three-day bootcamp focused on enhancing access to inclusive education and bridging gaps for school children.

Governor Barr. Caleb Manasseh Muftwang of Plateau State emphasized the need for infrastructural investment in schools, announcing the construction of new classrooms and the launch of several national policy documents aimed at improving education.
