Nigeria Remains Africa's Top Oil Producer Amid Challenges

Nigeria has maintained its status as Africa's largest oil producer, with crude oil production increasing from 1.422 million barrels per day in December 2025 to 1.459 million barrels per day in January 2026, according to the latest monthly oil market report released by OPEC. This increase of 37,000 barrels per day, however, still falls short of Nigeria's OPEC quota of 1.5 million barrels per day by approximately 50,000 barrels per day, marking the sixth consecutive month of production below its allocated target.

The report indicates that Nigeria's output is slightly higher at 1.47 million barrels per day according to secondary sources, including independent analysts. Despite the modest recovery, analysts caution that Nigeria's reliance on oil exports for budget support and foreign exchange earnings necessitates deeper reforms and increased upstream investment to enhance operational efficiency.

Nigeria aims to raise crude oil production to two million barrels per day by 2026 and further to 2.5 million barrels per day by 2027, contingent on improved security and infrastructure support in the oil-producing regions.
