Nigeria second only to India in number of people without electricity – REA MD

Nigeria ranks second only to India in the number of people without access to electricity, according to Abba Aliyu, the Managing Director and CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA). In an interview with Channels Television, Aliyu emphasized that while India has more people without power supply, Nigeria is actively working on a structured plan to address this issue.

The REA is focusing on underserved communities and areas not covered by the national grid, with a particular emphasis on the Distributed Access Renewable Energy Scale (DARES) initiative. This initiative, described as the largest public renewable energy project in the world, aims to deliver electricity to millions of Nigerians who currently live without power.

Aliyu highlighted the importance of addressing "electricity poverty" in the country and the agency's commitment to providing sustainable energy solutions to those in need.
