Nigeria Spends N84.69 Billion on Petrol Imports from Togo

In the fourth quarter of 2025, Nigeria spent N84.69 billion on petrol imports from Togo, as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics. This figure underscores Nigeria's ongoing reliance on imported fuel to meet domestic demand, despite efforts to enhance local refining capacity.

The total imports from Togo during this period amounted to N88.91 billion, with petroleum products making up a significant portion of Nigeria's trade with the West African country. The data further reveals that Nigeria sourced petrol from several countries, including Brazil, from which it imported petrol valued at N221.15 billion within the same quarter.

This heavy expenditure on petrol imports is linked to Nigeria's limited domestic refining capacity, despite being Africa's largest crude oil producer. The challenges faced by state-owned refineries have resulted in a continued dependence on foreign refined products to sustain domestic fuel supply.

Improvements in domestic fuel supply are anticipated with new refining capacity expected to come online in January 2026, which is projected to support the distribution of 60 to 65 million liters of petrol daily across the country.
