Senate Committee Advances Framework for State Police

On March 4, 2026, the Nigerian Senate Committee on State Police was inaugurated, led by Senator Barau Jibrin. The committee aims to develop a framework for establishing state police, responding to concerns about local law enforcement.

During a courtesy call, the committee, which includes Professor Olu Ogunsakin as chairman, sought advice from Senator Barau to enrich its report. The Inspector General of Police, Olutunji Disu, was commended for collaborating with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda to ensure national security.

The committee's mandate includes promoting accountability and safeguarding against abuse, as well as embarking on an enlightenment drive to create a robust public safety mechanism. The committee plans to conduct zonal public hearings across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones to allow stakeholders to contribute to the constitutional amendment process aimed at enhancing local law enforcement capabilities.
