Nigeria Senate Advances Proposal for State Police Framework

The Nigerian Senate has taken a significant step towards establishing state police as it received a framework proposal during a courtesy call from the steering committee of the Nigerian Police Force. The committee, inaugurated by Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu on March 4, 2026, is chaired by Professor Olu Ogunsakin.

Senate President Barau Jibrin emphasized the importance of the committee's work in enriching the report and addressing public safety concerns. The Senate is considering a bill to amend the 1999 constitution, allowing for the establishment of state and community police to enhance local law enforcement capabilities.

The committee plans to conduct zonal public hearings across six locations in Nigeria to promote broad participation and inclusivity in the establishment of state police. This initiative is seen as a crucial step in addressing Nigeria's security challenges and ensuring that the police system serves the interests of the people.
