Nigeria to Hold UK Trials for Diaspora Athletes

Nigeria is set to conduct trials in the United Kingdom for Nigerian diaspora athletes as part of a new talent pathway initiative. This program aims to identify and develop talent among Nigerian-born athletes living abroad, creating a clearer pathway for them to join the national team.

The trials will be overseen by Bukola Olopade, the Director General of the Nigerian Sports Commission, who emphasized that this initiative is part of a long-term plan to reform and strengthen Nigeria's sports system. Approximately 200 Nigerian athletes based abroad are expected to participate in the trials scheduled for May.

The program is designed to ensure continuous athlete development and better preparation for senior competitions. It also aims to bridge the gap between youth and elite levels of competition, particularly for athletes aged 17 to 19.

The initiative builds on previous successes in producing emerging talent through grassroots competitions and aims to enhance the overall structure of youth elite competitions in Nigeria.
