Nigeria and UK Strengthen Fight Against Trafficking Scams

Nigeria and the UK have launched a collaborative initiative to address the rising issue of human trafficking into Southeast Asia, particularly through scams that exploit Nigerians with fake overseas job offers. The event in Abuja, attended by officials including Michael Olugbod and Gill Lever, emphasized survivor-led advocacy, allowing victims to share their harrowing experiences of coercion and abuse in trafficking compounds.

Hajiya Binta Bello, Director General of NAPTIP, and Kehind Akomolaf, Director of Public Enlightenment, reiterated Nigeria's zero-tolerance stance against trafficking syndicates. Recent data from the United Nations indicates that at least 120,000 people are currently trapped in forced scam operations in Myanmar, with 300,000 victims across Southeast Asia.

The forum called for intensified public awareness campaigns and enhanced cross-border intelligence sharing to combat these evolving trafficking networks, which blend cybercrime with human exploitation.
