Nigeria and US Enhance Defense Cooperation Against Threats

On a courtesy visit to Nigeria, General William E. Ward, the former Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), was received by General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the Minister of Defence, represented by Mr.

Richard Pheelangwah, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, at Ship House in Abuja. The Permanent Secretary conveyed the Minister’s appreciation for General Ward’s visit and acknowledged his distinguished military leadership.

The discussions emphasized Nigeria's commitment to enhancing its strategic defense partnership with the United States, covering areas such as military training, intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism, maritime security, and professional military education. The meeting highlighted the significance of innovation and emerging technologies in addressing evolving security threats.

General Ward commended General Musa for his leadership and stressed the need for deeper economic ties between Nigeria and the United States, while also addressing contemporary security challenges and the importance of cybersecurity in defense architecture.
