Nigeria and US Enhance Security Cooperation in 2026

From August 12 to 13, 2026, the U.S.-Nigeria Joint Working Group convened to strengthen the security partnership between the two nations. The meeting took place at the Pentagon, led by General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) of Nigeria, who headed a high-level delegation that included Mr Taiwo Oyedele, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy; General Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Defence Staff; and Lieutenant General Parker Udiandeye, Chief of Defence Intelligence.

U.S. officials, including Julia Sokol, Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of War for International Security Affairs, participated in the discussions. The talks focused on enhancing shared security architecture, intelligence collaboration, and operational synergies.

The diplomatic mission was led by National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, co-chairing the Joint Working Group with Allison Hooker, U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs.

The meeting reviewed progress following Nigeria's designation as a Country of Particular Concern and emphasized the importance of sustained dialogue and cooperation in addressing terrorism and other security threats.
