Nigeria Strengthens Defence Ties with U.S. Amid Security Challenges

The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, OFR (Rtd), hosted a courtesy visit from General William E. Ward, the former Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), at his office in Ship House, Abuja.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Richard Pheelangwah, the Minister expressed appreciation for General Ward's visit, recognizing him as a distinguished military leader whose legacy influences security cooperation in Africa.

The discussions emphasized Nigeria's commitment to strengthening its strategic defence partnership with the United States, particularly in military training, intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism, maritime security, logistics, and professional military education. The meeting also addressed the importance of innovation, emerging technologies, and capacity-building in tackling security threats.

General Ward commended General Musa for his leadership and stressed the need for deepening economic ties and addressing security challenges, highlighting the growing significance of cybersecurity in modern defence.
