Nigerian Daniel Umemezie Named US National Youth Poet Laureate

Daniel Umemezie, an 18-year-old Nigerian-born poet, has been appointed as the United States National Youth Poet Laureate, a recognition he received in April after being selected from hundreds of applicants, including local poets laureate across the country. Umemezie is currently a student at Cedar Falls High School in Iowa, where he is also recognized as a homecoming king, a two-sport athlete, and an entrepreneur.

He has a diverse artistic background, having developed an early interest in the arts, playing nine musical instruments, and engaging in various forms of visual art. His poetry often delves into themes of memory and identity, reflecting his experiences of living between two cultures.

Umemezie views poetry as a powerful tool for promoting social change and amplifying the voices of young people, emphasizing its role in allowing them to express themselves and address societal issues. The National Youth Poet Laureate program, now in its 10th year, aims to recognize young writers whose work fosters creativity and civic engagement.
