Nigerian Championships Highlight Talent Depth Ahead of Tokyo 2025

The Nigerian Athletics Championships held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos on August 1-3, 2025, showcased the depth of talent among Nigerian athletes ahead of the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Standout performances were delivered by athletes like Tobi Amusan, Udodi Onwuzurike, and Nnamdi Onwaeze, highlighting Nigeria's talent pool.

However, the event was overshadowed by reports of Favour Ofili potentially switching allegiance to Turkey, citing financial incentives and frustrations with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN). Despite this, Ofili's eligibility to represent Turkey may be delayed until 2027, as per World Athletics rules.

The championships also exposed challenges within Nigerian athletics, including administrative issues and criticism of the AFN. The event also showcased progress, with the Nigerian relay team aiming for qualification for the 2025 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou.
