Nigerian Chemists Urge Investment in Research for Growth

At the 49th Annual International Conference, Workshop and Exhibition of the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN) held in Abuja, over 1,200 participants gathered to discuss the theme “Innovations in Chemistry for Industrial, Environmental and Social Responsibility.” CSN President, Prof. Rufus Sha’atu, emphasized the importance of chemistry in addressing various challenges, including food insecurity and climate change, and called for intentional investment in chemical research and innovation. He pointed out that Nigeria has not effectively translated scientific knowledge into sustainable solutions for national development.

Sha’atu also advocated for the appointment of a new Governing Council for the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON) to ensure legal operations. In his keynote address, Prof. Goodwill Ofunne from FISAS Group highlighted the future of chemistry in innovation that promotes environmental sustainability and social responsibility, noting that the oil and gas industry presents significant opportunities for such advancements.
