Nigerian Governor Zulum Declares Uncertainty Over Successor Ahead of 2027 Elections

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State, Nigeria, announced during a crucial meeting with stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Maiduguri on January 26, 2026, that he does not have a preferred successor for the 2027 elections. He warned against spreading rumors that could sow division within the party and emphasized the importance of a fair and transparent electoral process.

The governor called for the emergence of new individuals to occupy leadership positions within the APC to strengthen the party's grassroots base and promote inclusivity. Several prominent figures, including Umar Usman Kadafur, Maina Ma Aji Lawan, and other former government officials, attended the meeting.

Governor Zulum has been actively involved in enhancing community safety and support through initiatives like increasing volunteer forces and rebuilding churches destroyed by Boko Haram violence. He also emphasized that the conflict in Borno State is not a religious war but a security challenge that requires local and international cooperation.
