Nigerian Governors Unanimously Back State Police, Push Constitutional Changes

The Nigeria Governors' Forum has collectively endorsed the creation of state police units as a response to persistent security threats across the country. During meetings held in Abuja between Wednesday and early Thursday, governors from all 36 states united behind this proposal, with the forum's chairman, Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, communicating their joint position through an official communiqué.

The governors emphasized that any state police system must be grounded in constitutional protections and aligned with federal safeguards for citizens' rights. Rather than proceeding without legal backing, the forum indicated plans to engage the Attorney General's office to develop and review proposed constitutional amendments that would establish the necessary framework for such forces.

This deliberative approach suggests the governors view formal legal changes as essential before implementation. The push for state police comes amid mounting security concerns that have plagued multiple regions of Nigeria for years.

Insecurity driven by Boko Haram, armed banditry, and criminal activities has resulted in thousands of deaths and widespread displacement, particularly in the northern part of the country. Governors presented state police as one key reform needed to address these challenges while supporting broader national priorities.

The communiqué issued by the forum also referenced other developmental initiatives, including efforts around solar energy infrastructure, agricultural programmes, and nutrition-focused projects aimed at improving citizen welfare. The governors' backing for constitutional amendments to enable state police represents a significant consensus on security strategy, though the specific timeline for legislative action and Attorney General consultations remains undisclosed.
