Governors Back State Police Creation for Security Needs

On Wednesday, Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State stated that all 36 state governors are in full support of the creation of state police, which he believes is essential for addressing the country's security challenges. Speaking to newsmen in Abuja, Oyebanji expressed confidence that the constitutional amendment required for the establishment of state police would be transmitted to state houses of assembly for speedy approval.

He acknowledged the concerns regarding potential misuse of state police for political purposes but emphasized that the legislative process would incorporate legal safeguards to prevent abuse. Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who accompanied Oyebanji, described the establishment of state police as an inevitable response to the realities of national security.

He assured that the proposed legal framework would include mechanisms to minimize the risk of abuse. The governors are optimistic that the amendment will receive swift endorsement from the state assemblies once transmitted.
