Nigerian Man Sentenced to 9 Years for Forced Abortion

Adelek Adelani, a Nigerian man, received a nine-year prison sentence from the Letterkenny Circuit Court in County Donegal, Ireland, for unlawfully forcing a woman to take abortion pills to terminate her pregnancy. The court, presided over by Judge John Aylmer, characterized the offense as an extreme act of physical and emotional violence, noting the serious harm caused to the victim.

The incident occurred on February 14, 2020, when the woman, who had previously agreed to terminate her pregnancy in 2019, decided to keep her child after becoming pregnant again in early 2020. Adelani, who had researched the woman's intentions online, threatened her and forced her to swallow five misoprostol tablets.

Following the incident, the woman contacted the police, leading to Adelani's arrest. He was found guilty of unlawful termination of pregnancy and assault causing harm.

The court acknowledged the victim's courage and determination throughout the investigation and trial.
