Nigerian Navy Celebrates 70th Anniversary with Vision

The Nigerian Navy will celebrate its 70th anniversary from May 21 to June 4, 2026, with events scheduled across Lagos and nationwide. Rear Admiral Akinola Oladunjoye disclosed that the Navy is prepared to confront asymmetric threats associated with fourth-generation warfare and aims to address emerging fifth-generation security challenges through technological integration and manpower development.

The Navy plans to renew its fleet by inducting new patrol vessels, demonstrating its determination to sustain operational capabilities. An international maritime exercise is expected to be attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reinforcing Nigeria's position as a stabilizing force in Africa's maritime domain.

The Navy, which began on June 1, 1956, has evolved significantly, conducting successful maritime blockades during the Nigerian Civil War and contributing to international peacekeeping missions. The anniversary activities will include special prayers, sports competitions, community outreach projects, and a global firepower report ranking the Nigerian Navy as the strongest naval fleet in Africa.
