Nigerians Urged to Rediscover Hidden National Monuments

Egwuoniso, an official from the National Museum, addressed the need for Nigerians to rediscover and cherish their hidden national monuments, which she believes are vital to understanding the nation's rich history and cultural diversity. Speaking on Thursday, she noted that these monuments, which span centuries, tell the stories of ancestors that have profoundly shaped Nigeria's identity.

In an era of globalization, she stressed the importance of local heritage and urged every Nigerian, young and old, to embark on a journey to rediscover these treasures. Among the highlighted sites is the memorial for King Jaja of Opobo located in River State, which features a striking bronze statue commemorating the king, who was born into slavery in 1821 and became a powerful merchant king after founding the Kingdom of Opobo in 1869.
