Nigerians Spend N84.36bn on Meters in 2025

In 2025, Nigerians paid N84.36 billion for electricity meters, with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reporting the deployment of 965,303 meters throughout the year. The distribution began in the second half of the year, with 648,972 meters accounted for under the Meter Asset Program (MAP), representing 67.23% of the total.

The report highlighted that 125,025 meters were financed through the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF), accounting for 12.95%. The World Bank's $500 million initiative supported the distribution recovery program, resulting in 88,553 meters, or 9.17%.

The deployment was broken down quarterly, showing significant increases in installations. Despite assurances from the federal government that meters would be provided free of charge, there are reports of electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) demanding payments.

NERC Chairman Dr. Musliu Oseni confirmed that the government is responsible for financing the meters, while Dr.

Ayodeji Gbeleyi noted the importance of the World Bank's funding in supporting the distribution efforts.
