Nigerians Assured Safety Amid South Africa's Tensions

Temitop Ajayi, the Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, stated that Nigerians are safe in South Africa despite recent xenophobic tensions. He made these remarks during a briefing on Monday, emphasizing that the situation is under control and that both the Nigerian and South African governments prioritize the safety of all citizens, including foreigners.

Ajayi noted that while there have been anti-foreign protests and isolated incidents of violence in cities like Durban, Cape Town, and East London, there have not been widespread direct attacks on Nigerians. He called for caution and respect for local laws, urging Nigerians to remain calm and avoid unnecessary risks.

The ambassador highlighted that the recent tensions do not represent the views of the entire South African population, as the actions of a few do not reflect the broader community. He also mentioned that the South African police have issued advisories against targeting foreigners and that the situation remains relatively calm in major areas like Pretoria and Johannesburg.
