Nigerians Trust Election Technology Over INEC, Survey Finds

A survey conducted by the election observation group Yiaga Africa, known as the National Voter Intention Survey (NVIS 3.0), indicates that Nigerians have more trust in the technology used for elections than in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The survey shows that public confidence in INEC is at 34%, while trust in the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the IReV result transmission platform is at 49%.
This 15-percentage-point gap highlights a significant credibility challenge for INEC. The survey also noted an increase in public awareness of electoral reforms, rising from 24% in NVIS 1.0 to 62% in NVIS 3.0.
However, only 40% of young respondents expressed they were very likely to vote, with this demographic showing greater fear of electoral violence and lower trust in INEC. Yiaga Africa emphasized the urgency of rebuilding trust in INEC alongside improving election technology ahead of the 2027 general elections.
