Survey Shows Low Confidence in INEC Ahead of 2027 Elections

A survey conducted by Yiaga Africa indicates that only 34% of Nigerians are confident that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will conduct credible elections, a decline from 45% in previous surveys. The report, titled “Willing but Wary: How Nigerians Intend to Vote in 2027,” was based on interviews with 2,470 Nigerians aged 18 and above across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in September 2026.
While 84% of respondents expressed a likelihood to vote, the percentage of those "very likely" to vote decreased from 52% to 47%. Insecurity remains a significant barrier, with 61% fearing violence could prevent them from voting.
Trust in INEC is fragile, with 39% of respondents expressing a lack of confidence, particularly in the South-East and South-South regions. The Foundation for Peace Professionals emphasized the need for at least 50% voter turnout in the upcoming elections to ensure democratic credibility.
