Nigerian Blind Women Sambists Set for Historic World Cup

Rukayat Taiwo and Elizabeth Aeso, representing Nigeria, are preparing for their historic debut at the World Sambo Cup in Yerevan, Armenia, scheduled for April 11-12, 2026. Taiwo, the Lagos State champion, will compete in the 54 kg category, while Aeso will participate in the 59 kg category.

This event marks a significant milestone as they become the first African women to compete in this global tournament. Ham, the Vice President of the Nigeria Sambo Association, emphasized the importance of this achievement for Nigeria's journey in sports, particularly in blind sambo.

He expressed a commitment to empowering athletes through sport, highlighting the determination and resilience of blind athletes. Taiwo expressed her excitement about being part of this historic moment for Nigeria and Africa.

The 2026 World Cup will feature three disciplines: sambo, combat sambo, and blind sambo, catering to visually impaired athletes, starting on April 9.
