Over 3,000 Christians Killed in Nigeria in 2026

The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) reported that more than 3,000 Christians were killed, over 3,100 abducted, and 400 churches attacked in Nigeria during the first eight months of 2026. The report, released by Chairman Emeka Umeagbalasi, indicated that 3,083 Christians lost their lives and 3,193 were abducted in attacks linked to Islamist extremist groups from January to August 2026.

It noted a spike in violence during July and August, with 437 Christians killed and 393 abducted. August alone saw 138 deaths and 180 abductions, particularly in Plateau and Benue States.

The report alleged that armed groups of Fulani origin were significantly involved in these attacks, alongside other Islamist extremist groups. Intersociety urged the Federal Government to strengthen security in vulnerable areas, improve intelligence gathering, and protect places of worship amid ongoing violence against Christian communities.
