Over 6,000 Christians Killed or Abducted in Nigeria

A report by the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, InterSociety, revealed that over 6,000 Christians were killed or abducted in Nigeria during the first eight months of 2026. Specifically, 3,083 Christians were killed, and 3,193 were abducted between January and August.

The report, released in Enugu, raised concerns about ongoing attacks on churches and Christian communities, particularly in the North-Central, North-East, and parts of the South-East and South-West regions. The report was signed by Emeka Umeagbalasi, Lead Researcher; Chidinma Evangeline Udegbunam, Head of Campaign and Publicity; and Obianuju Joy Igboeli, Head of Civil Liberties and Rule of Law.

The situation escalated in July and August, with 437 Christians killed and 393 abducted, including 138 deaths and 180 abductions in August alone. The report attributed about 90% of the violence to jihadist Fulani herdsmen and bandits, with a significant number of abducted individuals being Igbo travelers.
