Bosun Tijani Appointed ITU Council Chair for 2026

Bosun Tijani, the Communications Minister of Nigeria, has been appointed as the Chair of the 2026 International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council. This announcement was made during the inaugural plenary session of the council held on April 28 in Geneva, Switzerland, by Isim Esen, the Special Assistant to the Minister on Media and Communications.

The ITU Council serves as the governing body of the union, responsible for overseeing policy direction and financial management to implement programs that support global digital connectivity and emerging technologies. Tijani's leadership comes at a critical time as the global digital landscape rapidly evolves, particularly with advancements in artificial intelligence and next-generation networks.

He expressed his honor in being entrusted with this role and emphasized the importance of serving all member states with respect and collaboration. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, the ITU Secretary-General, acknowledged Tijani's appointment as a reflection of Nigeria's growing leadership in global digital policy and its ongoing efforts to deepen the country's digital economy.
