Nestle Nigeria and Guinness Report Major Profit Gains
In the first nine months of the year, Nigeria's leading consumer goods companies experienced substantial profit increases despite a decrease in sales volume. Nestle Nigeria Plc (NGX: NESTLE) reported a pretax profit of 193.9 billion naira, marking a 52% rise.
Guinness Nigeria Plc (NGX: GUINNESS)'s profit increased by 55%, and Nigerian Breweries Plc (NGX: NB)'s profit rose by 33%. Six out of seven consumer companies analyzed reported revenue growth slower than the 14.6% inflation rate, indicating fewer goods sold in real terms.
However, five companies still managed profit increases of 18% or more. The economic recovery under President Bola Tinubu is benefiting corporate balance sheets more than household budgets.
A stronger naira and reduced raw material costs contributed to lower manufacturing expenses. Despite these gains, investor confidence appears shaky, as evidenced by a 1.09% decline in the NGX Consumer Goods Index in October.
Nestle's shareholders’ equity increased significantly, and the central bank's recent rate cut may help stimulate demand moving forward.
