Nigeria's Military Says US Troop Withdrawal Won't Weaken Security Ties

Nigeria's Defence Headquarters has moved to reassure the public that the planned departure of approximately 200 United States military personnel from the country will not diminish the security partnership between Abuja and Washington. Major General Samaila Uba, the Director of Defence Information, made the statement on Tuesday during a security briefing convened by the National Counter Terrorism Centre, responding to widespread inquiry from journalists about the implications of the American drawdown.

Uba characterised the troop reduction as a standard operational adjustment tied to specific mission parameters rather than evidence of deteriorating bilateral relations. According to his remarks, the bond between Nigeria and the United States remains robust and mutually beneficial.

He stressed that intelligence sharing, military training programmes, and broader defence cooperation between the two nations will continue uninterrupted. The Defence Headquarters also used the occasion to reaffirm the military's operational stance on Nigeria's internal security challenges.

Military leadership reiterated that the organisation remains firmly opposed to any form of negotiation with armed groups classified as terrorists or to the provision of financial incentives to criminal networks. The military's primary strategic objective, officials stated, centres on direct military action designed to eliminate armed actors engaged in violence against Nigerian civilians.

The clarification comes as speculation had circulated regarding whether the American personnel departure signalled a broader pullback in US commitment to Nigeria's counterterrorism efforts. The Defence Headquarters' statement sought to draw a distinction between routine force adjustments and substantive shifts in partnership scope, emphasising that ongoing cooperation mechanisms remain fully operational.
