US to Withdraw 200 Troops from Nigeria by September

The United States plans to withdraw about 200 troops from Nigeria by the end of September as part of a scaling down of its counterterrorism mission against Islamist militants, according to a report by The New York Times. The troops were deployed earlier in the year and have reportedly produced significant results in combating Islamist insurgents.

Following the withdrawal, small teams of US military trainers and intelligence analysts will continue to operate in Nigeria. Dagvin Anderson, commander of the US Africa Command (AFRICOM), noted that a previous operation in May, which resulted in the death of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, the second-in-command of ISIS, had weakened ISIS leadership in Nigeria and globally.

The US will maintain its intelligence-sharing partnership with Nigeria despite the troop reduction. This decision follows recent talks between the US and Nigeria regarding the protection of Christian communities in Nigeria's Middle Belt, amid concerns over violence attributed to multiple factors, including terrorism and banditry.
