US to Pull 200 Troops From Nigeria by Late September

The United States military is set to remove approximately 200 troops stationed in Nigeria, with the departure scheduled for completion by late September. The decision comes after what American military officials have described as a productive deployment that began earlier this year.

The troops were sent to Nigeria to bolster counterterrorism efforts against Islamist militant networks operating in the country. The deployment, though limited in size, achieved measurable results according to both American and Nigerian officials.

One notable success involved the elimination of a senior Islamic State operative during joint military operations. Despite these gains, Pentagon leadership has determined that the larger contingent is no longer needed at its current strength.
