Nigeria's Oil Production Rebounds Amidst Ongoing Challenges

Nigeria's oil production has seen a slow rebound, currently at around 1.66 million barrels per day. This recovery is overshadowed by ongoing issues such as oil theft, pipeline attacks, and the departure of foreign oil companies, which have contributed to a significant decline in production.

Historically, Nigeria produced about 2.2 million barrels per day from 2005 to 2010, occasionally exceeding this figure. Currently, production levels are nearly 600,000 barrels below earlier peaks, which is not a cause for celebration.

The rise in organized oil theft has escalated beyond local theft to involve industrial criminal enterprises with foreign networks. To address these issues, the Nigerian government must implement tighter security measures, improve pipeline monitoring, and ensure serious prosecution of those involved in oil theft.

Additionally, restoring production to 2.2 million barrels per day is crucial for boosting government income, supporting the naira, attracting investment, and creating jobs in the oil industry. The Tinubu administration is urged to prioritize these reforms.
