Nigeria's Petrol Imports Surge 207% in June 2026

In June 2026, Nigeria's petrol import rose dramatically by 207% to 543 million litres per day, up from 182.9 million litres in May 2026, according to data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). This surge puts additional pressure on the Naira in the foreign exchange market.

The daily petrol receipt reached 50.6 million litres in June, compared to 47.4 million litres in May. The Dangote Refinery's operational capacity averaged 101.36%, which is deemed sufficient to meet domestic consumption needs.

However, the NMDPRA expressed concerns about the reliance on a single source for petrol, which could create a monopoly. Despite a 10% increase in crude oil receipts at local refineries, the overall petrol supply dynamics indicate a significant shift in the country's fuel supply landscape.

Additionally, the total stock of petrol increased by 22% in June compared to May, while other fuel types like diesel and kerosene saw declines in supply.
