Nigeria's Power Plants Operating Below Capacity Despite Improved Grid Stability - NERC Data Reveals

According to data from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) released in January 2026, Nigeria's power plants are operating at around 36% of their installed capacity, with only 4,900 megawatts available out of an estimated 13,000 megawatts. Despite some technical improvements in grid stability, maintenance issues, gas supply shortages, and transmission bottlenecks continue to limit electricity supply to homes and businesses.

The high load factor of around 90% suggests that power plants are operating close to their limits, leaving little room for contingencies during peak consumption periods. However, the grid has shown improved voltage stability, indicating a tighter system control and reduced risk of blackouts.

The report highlights the need for increased generation capacity, distribution efficiency, and energy production to meet the growing demand for electricity in Nigeria.
