Efetobor Sodje, a former defender who represented Nigeria at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, expressed deep disappointment regarding Nigeria's failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Super Eagles were eliminated by the Democratic Republic of Congo in a playoff after a penalty shootout, finishing second in Group C of the CAF qualifiers behind South Africa.

Despite a defeat to Gabon in the semi-finals, Nigeria's absence from the World Cup marks the second consecutive time they have failed to qualify, following their unsuccessful bid for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) faced criticism for unpaid salaries and bonuses, which many believe affected team stability during the qualification campaign.

Looking ahead, Nigeria aims to improve their performance in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and will focus on the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, where they are drawn in Group L alongside co-hosts Tanzania, Madagascar, and Guinea-Bissau, with the campaign set to begin in September.
