NIMASA Launches Automated Ship Registry for Efficiency

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has commenced the automation of the Nigerian Ship Registry to improve the competitiveness of the Nigerian flag and enhance ship registration services. This initiative aims to allow shipowners and maritime stakeholders to access registration services at any time, thereby reducing administrative delays associated with traditional paper-based processes.
NIMASA will conduct a two-part stakeholder webinar on October 6 and October 8, 2026, to showcase the new automated system and facilitate interaction among industry players. The automated system is designed to streamline application and approval processes, expedite the issuance of electronic certificates, and enhance transaction efficiency with the Nigerian Ship Registry.
It will also provide secure, real-time tracking of ship mortgages, improving transparency for financial institutions involved in vessel financing. Dr Dayo Mobereola, the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of NIMASA, stated that this automation is part of broader efforts to create a more accessible and competitive environment for international shipping.
