NIMASA Unveils New Standards for Seafarers' Training

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has launched a comprehensive set of standards for seafarers’ education, training, assessment, examination, certification, revalidation, endorsement, and medical fitness certification. This initiative, announced by Deputy Director/Head of Public Relations Osagie Edward, aims to strengthen Nigeria's compliance with international maritime regulations and enhance the global competitiveness of Nigerian seafarers.

The new regulatory framework is outlined in a Marine Notice issued under the Merchant Shipping (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) Regulations, 2025. It includes updated requirements for maritime education and training, with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) approving new National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) curricula in Nautical Science and Marine Engineering Technology.

Starting October 2025, prospective officers must complete these approved programs and possess qualifying sea service to sit for Certificate of Competency examinations. Additionally, mandatory Bridging Courses and a 15-week Ratings Education and Training Programme have been introduced to facilitate compliance with the new standards.
