NIPOST to Launch Digital Postcode System by 2026

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has announced plans to establish a digital postcode system for every building in Nigeria, with a target implementation date set for 2026. Tola Odeyemi, the Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, emphasized that this initiative aims to create a machine-readable standard for locating addresses across the country.

The project will position Nigeria among the first African nations to develop a postcode system down to the unit level. Odeyemi noted that Nigeria's diverse geography necessitates different approaches to address mapping and postcode allocation.

The design of the postcode delineation process will ensure that postcode boundaries align with existing administrative structures and do not overlap local government boundaries. The initiative is part of NIPOST's broader digital address initiative, which seeks to create a standardized, technology-driven address framework to improve the identification of locations for postal services, logistics, and emergency response.
