Nigeria to Launch Digital Postcode System in October

Nigeria is set to implement a digital postcode system starting in October, a plan initially proposed in 2009. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, announced the timeline during a workshop in Abuja organized by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST).
The new system will provide every building in the country with a unique machine-readable digital address, which will facilitate precise mapping and improve delivery and emergency response services. The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance Nigeria's digital ecosystem, which includes a three-year plan to bridge the country's 90,000 kilometers of fiber rollout and extend connectivity to 20 million Nigerians through 3,700 telecommunications towers.
The digital postcode system will consist of a six-digit alphanumeric code, with the Lagos Island postcode being 100001. This project follows previous attempts to simplify address verification and aims to create a live database of physical addresses.
