NISER and NiDCOM Push for Stronger Diaspora Policy

The Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER) and the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) convened a high-level workshop on Tuesday to advocate for a stronger diaspora policy aimed at boosting national development. NISER's Director General, Antonia Taiy Simbin, highlighted that the Nigerian diaspora is a critical national asset, contributing over $20 billion annually in remittances, the highest in Africa.

She noted that beyond financial contributions, the diaspora brings valuable expertise and innovation that significantly enhance Nigeria's competitiveness. However, she pointed out persistent challenges such as inconsistent policies and weak institutional coordination that hinder effective engagement.

NiDCOM's Chairman and CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, urged a strategic shift to utilize diaspora remittances for investment rather than mere consumption. She emphasized the need for data-driven policymaking to transform challenges like brain drain into opportunities for brain gain.

The workshop also featured discussions on the role of the diaspora in strengthening Nigeria's healthcare system, with representatives from the Nigerian Medical Association underscoring the importance of knowledge transfer.
