NISO and Canada Discuss Partnership for Power Sector Modernization

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and the Canadian High Commission have initiated discussions to form a strategic partnership aimed at modernizing Nigeria's electricity sector. This collaboration was discussed during a courtesy visit by Canadian High Commissioner David Sproule to NISO Headquarters in Abuja, where he met with NISO's Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Abdu Bello Mohammed, and the NISO Management Team.

Engr. Mohammed emphasized the importance of this visit in strengthening Nigeria-Canada bilateral relations and highlighted NISO's mandate under the Electricity Act 2023, which includes System Operations, Market Operations, and System Planning. He outlined NISO's initiatives in digital transformation, such as implementing Supervisory Control Data Acquisition (SCDA) Systems and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI).

Key areas for potential collaboration include capacity development, renewable energy integration, and investment in power infrastructure. Engr. Mohammed expressed eagerness to learn from Canada's expertise in modern electricity market operations and believes this visit marks the beginning of a sustained partnership.
