NISO Enhances National Grid Stability with New Investments

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) is intensifying its efforts to improve the stability and reliability of Nigeria's national grid. Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer Bello Mohammed announced this initiative during a town hall meeting in Abuja, detailing ongoing reforms and priorities aimed at enhancing grid performance.

NISO is investing in advanced control systems, real-time monitoring technology, and constructing new national control centres in Osogbo, Osun State, and Gwagwalada in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Mohammed noted a significant achievement with a recent synchronisation test involving Nigeria and 14 other African countries, which underscored the need for improved coordination in managing interconnected electricity systems.

The organisation is also deploying technologies such as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Energy Management System (EMS), Automatic Generation Control (AGC), and IoT-based monitoring systems to enhance operational efficiency and early detection of grid issues. An example cited was the detection of anomalies along the Shagamu-Ikorodu transmission corridor through IoT monitoring, with investigations ongoing.
