NLC and TUC clash over N70,000 transport allowance for workers

Nigeria's two largest labour bodies are at odds after the federal government approved a N70,000 transport allowance, with TUC rejecting it while NLC defends the deal.

Nigeria's organised labour movement has split over President Bola Tinubu's administration's approval of a N70,000 transport allowance for workers. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) accepted the proposal following negotiations with government officials, but the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has publicly rejected it, creating a rare public disagreement between the two union federations.

The TUC's rejection centres on government credibility. Union leaders argue that the federal government has a poor track record of honouring previous wage agreements and that temporary allowances do not adequately address the financial struggles Nigerian workers face amid rising fuel costs and living expenses.

The TUC has instead called for a permanent salary increase rather than a one-off payment. NLC President Joe Ajaero has challenged the TUC's stance, pointing out that the rival federation did not participate in the negotiations that produced the agreement.

Ajaero questioned the logic of opposing a measure that was not drafted by TUC representatives. He also stated that the NLC pursued the allowance as part of efforts to secure better overall compensation packages for members.

The NLC chief suggested that if TUC wanted different terms, it should negotiate separately with the government rather than reject what other unions have accepted. Both organisations have cautioned against the government using their disagreement to its advantage.

TUC officials warned that the split over this particular allowance should not be interpreted as a fundamental breakdown in organised labour unity. The dispute reflects differing strategies within Nigeria's union movement, with the TUC prioritising structural wage reform and the NLC accepting incremental relief measures.

The N70,000 allowance has now become the subject of ongoing debate within labour circles.
