NLC Rejects N6 Trillion Power Sector Bailout Proposal

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by President Joe Ajaero, has firmly rejected the proposed N6 trillion bailout for the power sector, stating that such financial interventions have historically failed to improve electricity supply nationwide. Ajaero emphasized that the bailout is merely a symptom of deeper structural failures within the power sector.

He argued that the continued deployment of public funds to sustain a fundamentally flawed system places an undue burden on ordinary citizens, who face inefficiencies, high tariffs, and persistent outages. The NLC called for urgent structural reforms in the energy sector, including the merging of the Ministries of Petroleum and Power to create a unified Ministry of Energy for better coordination.

Ajaero insisted that public funds should not support failed privatization efforts and that electricity should be treated as a social service, ensuring affordable and reliable power supply for all Nigerians. He urged the government to convene a stakeholders' summit to develop a people-centered roadmap for the power sector.
