NLC Rejects N6tn Power Bailout, Demands Structural Reform

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by President Joe Ajaero, has firmly rejected a proposed N6 trillion bailout for power sector companies, stating that such financial interventions have historically failed to enhance electricity supply across Nigeria. Ajaero articulated that the bailout is merely a symptom of deeper structural failures within the power sector.

He insisted that the Nigerian government should not continue to deploy public funds to sustain a fundamentally flawed system, which places an undue burden on ordinary citizens through inefficient services and high tariffs. Ajaero called for the merging of the Ministries of Petroleum and Power to create a unified Ministry of Energy for better coordination.

He emphasized that electricity should be treated as a social service and not a profit-driven commodity, urging the government to convene a stakeholders' summit to develop a people-centered roadmap for the power sector that prioritizes service delivery and public interest.
