NLC Criticizes FG's ₦3 Trillion Power Subsidy Plan

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the Federal Government's proposed ₦3 trillion subsidy plan for power generating companies (Gencos), alleging it is a bribe intended to influence the upcoming 2027 general elections. During the annual conference of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) in Abuja, NLC President Ajaero expressed that the plan is politically motivated and unjustifiable, emphasizing that there is no reason to commit such a significant amount of public funds to privatized electricity firms that have failed to enhance power supply over the past decade.

The NLC described the subsidy as a clandestine arrangement designed to benefit a select group of investors, noting that electricity generation remains between 4,000 to 5,000 megawatts, a figure comparable to pre-privatization levels. The labor leader highlighted ongoing issues with frequent national grid collapses and erratic supply, despite promises of reform and rising tariffs.
