NLC Calls for End to River State's Contributory Pension Scheme

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), represented by its River State Chairman Alex Agwanwor, has urged the immediate termination of the contributory pension scheme in the state. Speaking at the 2026 Workers' Day celebration in Port Harcourt, Agwanwor expressed concerns over the alleged lack of transparency in the scheme and the government's failure to fulfill its counterpart funding obligations.

He highlighted that the state government has not constituted a pension board to ensure the retirement of workers enrolled in the scheme. Agwanwor emphasized that the contributory pension scheme has failed to protect the interests of River State workers and made a humble appeal for its termination, advocating for a return to a defined benefit scheme.

He also called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to address issues affecting local government workers, including the verification portal results and the stoppage of monthly salaries. Agwanwor commended the Fubara-led government for its commitment to infrastructure upgrades and worker welfare.
