NLC, SERAP Declare RMAFC Proposed Salary Increase for Political Office Holders Illegal, Insensitive

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) have criticized the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) for proposing a salary increase for political office holders in Nigeria. The NLC and SERAP called the move illegal, insensitive, and unconstitutional, arguing that it would deepen inequality and poverty in the country.

The RMAFC Chairman, Mohammed Shehu, had defended the proposed increase, stating that the salaries of public office holders had remained stagnant since 2008 and needed urgent review. However, the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, declared the proposal unjust and warned that it could lead to social unrest.

SERAP demanded that the Federal Government ensure compliance with a court judgment directing the RMAFC to review downward the salaries of lawmakers to reflect the economic reality of the country. They emphasized the need for equitable remuneration across all levels of government to uphold the spirit of the constitution and promote social stability.
